Accessibility Statement

Bierton Parish Council strives to ensure that our services are accessible to people with disabilities. Bierton Parish Council has invested a significant amount of time and resources to help ensure that its website is made easier to use and more accessible for people with disabilities, with the strong belief that every person has the right to live with dignity, equality, comfort and independence.

Bierton Parish Council makes available the UserWay Website Accessibility Widget that is powered by a dedicated accessibility server. The software allows the Wendover Parish website to improve its compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 A).

The biertonvillage.org.uk accessibility menu can be enabled by clicking the accessibility menu icon that appears on the corner of the page. After triggering the accessibility menu, please wait a moment for the accessibility menu to load in its entirety.

The accessibility widget will allow you to access:

  • change contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

Compliance Status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • live video streams do not have captions
  • you cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • images may not have useful alt text or be marked-up as decorative
  • some iFrames are missing a title and description
  • Some documents have multiple static elements with the same id attribute
  • images may not be free from text
  • There is no way to skip the repeated content in the page header (for example, a ‘skip to main content’ option).
  • It is not always possible to change the device orientation from horizontal to vertical without making it more difficult to view the content.
  • It is not possible for users to change text size without some of the content overlapping.
  • Third party content that is under someone else’s control and was not paid for by Wendover Parish Council

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Many of our older PDF and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards – for example, they may not be structured so they are accessible to a screen reader.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDF or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they do not contain essential information.

Any new PDF or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 20th September 2021.

We used an automated on-page accessibility tool to test our web pages.

There may be other issues that our testing has not picked up. The website will be tested again, and this statement will be updated as required.
